First of all, I should warn everyone this an opinionated post. I do not mean to offend anyone, and apologize in advance if my views are not shared or seem offensive. I apologize but feel the need to discuss…
When visiting one of my favorite blogs, Along the Shore , I read the post about the latest Dsquared2 collection which left me first irritated, insulted, and then got me thinking!
Dsquared2 is owned by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten, and I have always thought highly of the guys, but have they taken this ” I am just too cool” too far? Beer? and a dress…. can I say classy? Plus, what’s up with the Maple leafs… .as a Canadian I am offended, people in Canada do not drink Budweiser beer 24/7 and look like timber-jacks… and the band aids (what is this Nelly facial bandage reincarnated?)? Great Inspiration (camping), but that’s insulting (to me as a Canadian). Lindsey Lohan should be their new face! Heads up ladies, we should all hit the Beer Store... Beer is the hottest accessory! ooh and don’t forget the trucker hats!

This grunge trend has gone too far to my liking. I know the “I don’t give a shit” attitude and ” I don’t care how I look” and ” haven’t showered in weeks” appearance is considered cool...but I feel like it has done too far.
At first I found the trend to a certain degree liberating and artistic, but now I feel this has gone beyond appearance and the trend is becoming a cult of attitude and lifestyle. I do not think that looking drunk, wobbling all over the place and chain smoking is at all cool!

But why is this trend so embraced? What is so appealing about grunge and drunk 16 year olds being titled “It” girls and worshiped as gods of cool? Why is Teen Vogue party polluted by under-age stoned, drunk, kids chain-smoking… where is the Vogue class Anna Wintour? Why would Amy Astley (Editor-in-Chief of Teen Vogue) present this image (they are teens)?

Ugh, Ugh, Ugh!! I hate this, teens represented in such an awful way! Grunge chic can be done in a classy, fun way. This is just too far. I agree entirely with you! Showering is attractive; trucker hats, beer, cigarettes, and ripped apart clothing is not. Sure some well placed shredding is cool, but not this unkempt look. These TV pictures are not attractive AT ALL. And DSquared2 runway just looks like a bunch of trailer trash hicks got together and put on a show!

I actually really like the first Dsquared look. the plaid and the jacket look cute. and with the rest of the show, i think that the look is edgy and creative. i dont think that they are trying to portray canadians negatively. i believe that they just took the clicheé and drew inspiration from it. look at haute couture for example, non of the looks are supposed to be practical or streetstyle.
as for the other photos, i dont like the look applied to daily life. and its surprising teen vogue would show a picture of a girl smoking weed.
Misha: I don't might the clothes as much as I mind the beer as accessories.I do like Dsquared but not this collection.

i think the grunge look is over done, especially when it becomes a life style. I don't think beer, chain smoking, and not showering for 10 days is ever the classiest thing.

i couldn't have said it better. i agree with you 100000000xmillion%. i've always wondered why the youth of this generation feels the need to show off being belligerently drunk, stoned, etc etc. i mean we all did it in college and it's over with, but seriously underage and flaunting it all over the internet is just wrong and stupid.. these pics are public, their parents have access to them, etc. i like some of the grunge trends but i'm over it now. i want to get back to classy and elegant stuff. i think we have similar style! ruffles, girly stuff, simpleness. tres chic!
Marta that's so true. I can't stand underage "it girls" who can't even drive, getting high at 21+ parties surrounded by older men. Not to mention they're hammered, and most likely going home with one of them. Childhood and adolescence is just stolen from these girls. I guess that's the downside of having too much money. You either do nothing with your life because you don't need the financial support for it, or you bust your ass in order to take over your family's hard earned company. In my opinion, I'd go for the latter. It's where the classy girls end up on top.
A great post - as you know, I totally agree with you. There were bits and pieces that I liked from this collection but I was overtaken by the trucker hats and the bandaids and especially beer as accessories???? Ridiculousness. I am so over this.
I'm with you on the accessories, Marta — some of the pieces themselves I find wearable if styled differently, but the beer and the trucker hats I just don't get. It looks cliche, predictable, even comical and foolish, and I don't find the statement fresh or creative, or even witty.
As for the grunge lifestyle, the kind depicted in those photos is definitely not one I want to be part of. Liberated fun and even rebelliousness has a place, but I still have far more admiration for people who DO give a shit after the party is over. No matter how devastating an 'It' girl's style may be, style will always be just one factor of what it takes for me to admire someone.
Take it from me though — you yourself obviously have more than just style going for you. What makes your blog one of my favorites is that along with your simplicity and attention to detail, you also undeniably carry real grace and class, and even more so, INTELLIGENCE and a real passion for your pursuits — characteristics that I think are so underrated by many, but I find are always worth emulating, for they withstand hype and are powerful at any age, any place, and any time.

I don't think this trend inspired the lifestyle, I think the lifestyle has always been the same and that's a whole another problem.

I hear what your saying and kind of agree with you, i am also canadian so it's kind of offensive to me as well but i must say i read your comment on that blog and you are being a bit of a hypocryte. why would champagne or wine be any better? Is it classier to get drunk off those instead. I don't really think so.
i completely agree with you and think its great that you brought this up. teenagers these days are being brought up to think that smoking, sneaking into clubs and acting like 2 dollar hookers is cool. obviously, they are wrong. however, by the time they realize it - it might be too late. needless to say. a proof of it is a high rate of underage pregnancy……. thanks for bringing this topic up, marta, i love your blog !!!

Anon 11:31: I can agree with you on that, but I was speaking of a show and the stereotype of girl carrying the Budweiser. As in my post I taking of the influences on the younger teens…and the entire trend going to far in my eyes,and this goes beyond Dsquared2.

the style made it even more obvious - not really a good influence not to mention the style itself looks tacky to me or maybe am I just getting old! hope not!
There're just no boundaries with teen celebrities drinking and doing drugs, it's just sad…
I personally don't think that the grunge look is for me but I respect the look. Obviously I think that trucker hats are gross and unnecessary and using beer as an accessory gives a bad statement and a wrong impression, but overall I like the "end result" that goes into not caring about what your wearing. Again, I would never dress to look like that; I care about personal hygiene, matching, and putting effort into my outifts too much ;0)
The only good end result that can come out of teenagers dressing like the ones in your pictures is that it gives those who dress with a certain elegance and class,such as yourself, a greater oportunity to stand out and flaunt their efforts.

Beer going down the runway of Dsquared definitely not the classiest act. And definitely if anyone thought that would be a great accessory in Canada and tried it, would get a little notice from the police. Ha ha. I do like grunge and it can be a lot of fun but at a certain point it becomes trashy, drawing that line is what's challenging!

my problem isn't so much this collection, but the fact that dsquared basically sold out and moved to italy. not that they are the only canadian designers to do so, but really, we wonder why canada's fashion industry is somewhat lame? everyone gets hot and ships out.
now its like a "haha, we're funny, and we're going to make fun of our home country that we left" kind of thing. why bother?!
i still love them, but sometimes the its a little irritating…

Amen Amen Amen! Yeesh I hate the grunge trend so very much, from the gross tattered leggings to sheer white t-shirts that COME WITH RIPS IN THEM ALREADY (and cost $75, mind you). It is so not cute, I am a serious girly girl and I don't like this trend either. Whatever happened to dresses, and stocking and heels, and hats and cute peacoats and clean hair? Is it really that much to ask??

I don't know what to say about Dsquared2…they are the designers, it's their art. Not much we can do.
As for the drinking, smoking and getting high - let's face it - that's what most teenagers do. I certainly wouldn't think to put this kind of behavior and Vogue magazine in the same context, though…
I am really glad you asked this questions.. because I really cant stand this new hype with fashion.. Is it really that sexy and cool to show drunk and stoned women wearing things that are just not appropriate in any way and call it STYLE.. It angers me, not just because the actual fashion sucks, but the fact theyre making this lifestyle a lot more popular, I see it everywhere. It really is sad and I really hope the media and the people behind the fashion magazines will soon stop it, its getting annoying.

I would consider myself to have the grunge look, but I do not want to be associated with this type of behavior. I am 17, and I do not drink, smoke, do drugs, or party. it really upsets me that I may possibly be perceived that way just because of what I wear.
I completely agree with you on the fact that it has gone too far. I pick my clothes because they feel like ME. I feel like teenagers, and all people really, that act like that (no matter what style of clothing they are wearing) are very wrong and out of line. being free and artist is very good, but altering your self (by drugs or alcohol) is not being "free".. it's changing your mind to have fun. everyone should be able to have fun without altering their mind set with chemicals.

Wow, I'm also shocked that such a high profile mag would promote illegal behavior. The grunge "look" is just another style of dress, but drug use photographed at a Vogue Teen party WTF??
I agree, I think it has been taken a little bit too far.
I get the attraction to the aesthetic - it's an anti-fashion statement so to speak, it offers an alternative.
However, as someone who has dressed this way her whole life, I feel it's somewhat liberating that it's now found beautiful to have messy hair, minimal makeup, and ecclectic clothing.
Is it high fashion though?
Absolutely not
this is not surprising, the 90′s are just having their turn with the fashion industry. I grew up living this lifestyle… its a recipe for death and disaster. my opinion if you’d like to hear it is that supply and demand is the problem, we as adults with children or no have to teach these young people a better way. this is only appealing because we allow it to be. xo
