Hello Darlings,
With every new step comes a wave of anxiety. Meanwhile establishing a career path comes a wardrobe crisis. Getting thrown into a world of conservative, prim and fancy is not an easy endeavor.Especially when trying to make a lasting first impression and for me the way you’re received is shaped by that impression. Of course, there’s that good-old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”, but really don’t you judge people even in the slightest manner when you first meet them? Personally,I try to stay away from judging however I do form a certain opinion based on that first impression.
As Edith Head noted, “You can have anything you want in life if you dress for it.” Which makes you wonder, is the secret to success a killer wardrobe? Well, such silly qualities as intelligence, dignity,honesty and wit are quite useful. But what can compete with a woman in Christian Louboutin. Don’t be freaked out…I am only joking!!! But if you do believe in the above statement, then this post is about to get super dull for you….
… At the end of the day, the work that you put into your future is exactly what you will receive in return. No hard work, no return and in that case Mr. Louboutin is not going to come to your rescue just because you own a dozen pairs of his shoes. For me as a woman, success is the greatest pleasure and being able to stand on my own two feet proudly is the biggest goal.Therefore when presented with such an opportunity as this internship I really do want to do my best.
As some of you darling women will know, being young and commanding respect is not an easy task. Being girl-y is especially frowned upon in a “serious professional” atmospheres, I should know since I have been underestimated because I like pink, enjoy getting my hair done, obsess over my nails and prefer skirts over pants. I have been told that “with such a pretty face, you don’t have to work hard. Just smile!” (I know a total dirt bag!) or “why not just marry well?!” (dirt bag #2). I am sure that some women are lucky enough to ” be born” into wealth and have the pleasure of exploring their interests without the pressure of financial independence, but for the rest of us whose father is not Bill Gates or Donald Thump working hard is necessary in order to succeed. And for those few that think that pretty looks are going to secure you a lovely life, is bound to get a big slap of reality at some point. Same goes for those that believe in depending on men, at one point they might get bored and soon comes the next one. With given opportunities and privileges that we have in North America (can’t speak for the rest of the world) it is an absolute shame that women would underestimate their abilities. Although there are going to be hard times and someone telling you that you will fail, remember that there will also be times when someone is going to open a new door for you. I am very excited to open mine…

This is such an important step for me and I just wanted to be accepted for who I am. I was and still am very keen on staying true to my personal style. Knowing that I was to graduate in summer of 2011, I have been preparing my wardrobe by purchasing items that would work for everyday as well as work. By anticipating, I was able to purchase key pieces that I really love. By purchasing over a long period of time I was able to spend more on every item and did not have to max out my Visa or compromise on quality. I could buy higher end, quality pieces without having to break my budget. You can find my new purchases here (updated regularly). Overtime, I have created a work wardrobe that had some of my favorite staples. And the latest addition was this beautiful BCBG Max Azria skirt. It fits perfectly and I adore the feminine shape. At the end of the day, I settled on black and white but with personal touches. I think the hardest part was to never compromise on yourself and the person that you’re

Even if the “working girl-esque” vestiary seems offering a various palette of stylish (but uber conservative indeed) possibilites, I really understand that it can be difficult to find her own way, to reach this fragile alchemy between your inner self and these (kindly oppressive) standarts of “corporate credibility” . . .
BUT I can’t help to think that your enlightened words and your deeply understated sense of style (notably) are talking for you about this objective Chère Marta !!!

You look so beautiful, Marta! Although I get a feeling if you have, lets put it this way, “the older generation people” at work, particularly, those with lots of PhDs and similar tiny letters after their names, the skirt length will be discussed at some point… I hope not, though…
It does mean a lot, doesn’t it?
But you know, you are smart and you look great and you have a wonderful taste, so don’t panic. Just take things easy and keeps your eyes open. I am sure, you will figure everything out pretty soon. You have just only started, so don’t try to achieve EVERYTHING, nobody would expect you to, to be honest. And I am sure people like you more then you think they do, because, lets face it, you’ve got the internship!

I just got an internship too! Thankfully it’s one with a business casual dress code.

There is a statement of truth: looking good, or making a bit of effort on your appearance makes some difference to the way people see you, as well as gives you confidence. But defintiely agreed, that it’s not the most important.
It’s so important to be an independent woman, no matter what the circumstance. I would never depend fully on a man and I know looks will fade.

Dressing well helps, but yes you’re right, hard work is required for success. I don’t wear suits to work because I work for myself, but when I do for networking events, its feels weird!

I am really really touched by this post. In my previous workplace I always saw young women who dressed plain cheap or just wrong trying to fit into the work world. There is a certain degree if seriousness that is expected from one as they enter the formal work sector but I believe it can be achieved just fine without having to compromise one’s inner style if one just waits to find the perfect pieces and prioritizes quality over quantity. A lot of times I also see women, buying clothes blindly trying to fit into a mould when truly they do not know what their style is.
You seem to have it in spades and are surely not just another pretty face. It was great to come across such an honest and refreshing post and I truly hope we can keep in touch…google friend connect/ twitter/ facebook…maybe?

I think too many girls take the “fake it until you make it” advice too far. I think girls need to find that balance by understanding that both are important in order to be a front-runner or a competitive factor in their field.
