Smart girls know you can paint the town red without going into the red. So go ahead and plan ahead and enjoy a night on the town without the financial hangover.
Here are five tips for going out without going “all in.”
1. Start early — Getting ready together is one of the best parts of being a girl. Invite your friends to start the night at your place. Have everyone bring one extra outfit item or accessory and give that trusty Little Black Dress a unique twist. By exchanging clothes and makeup you can skip a last minute run to the mall driven by the urge for something new. Be sure to have some nibbles and cocktails.
2. Hit the ATM — Make it cash only for a night on the town. One too many martinis and it’s easy to become free and loose with your plastic. Besides, your evening bag is tiny, save the room for your lipstick and phone.
3. Think quality not quantity — Cheap liquor, accepting drinks from strangers and late night fast food is no way to save a buck. Choose the best food and libations you can afford and then savor them. Life is too short for the hangover that comes from well drinks and drive-through tacos.
4. Happy hour, part deux — Obviously, the traditional happy hour is a great place to save money in your entertainment budget. However, lots of bars and restaurants offer 10 p.m. happy hour deals on food and, occasionally, drinks. Scout one out in your town with a site like opentable.com and make it a predetermined spot on your nighttime itinerary. Since you pre-partied at home, you’ll be ready for a little nighttime nosh.
5. Designate a driver — After doing such a great job planning a fabulous night out, why hand over your savings to the cabbie? Set up a system with your best girls and take turns driving different nights. (To help the idea gain traction, offer to go first.) Many bars offer free nonalcoholic drinks to the “DD.” It will only take one night with a free ride, and your friends will agree it’s a good deal for everyone. Besides, a sober influence can help prevent that sketchy guy at last call from getting anyone’s digits.
