Hello Darlings, Every great outfit begins in your lingerie drawer. As Elle Macpherson says, “if you’re wearing lingerie that makes you feel glamorous, you’re half way there to turning heads.” As many of us know, beautiful undergarments can make you feel on top of the world, while a bad panty line can ruin an otherwise fabulous look.

As women come in all shapes and sizes, I ventured to one of my favorite Toronto shopping centers, Sherway Gardens in search for answers about all things undergarments and their roles in supporting your assets.Finding attractive and proper fitting lingerie can be as hard as finding your perfect little black dress. So, I asked John Izzo, Vice President of Design and Product Development for lingerie store La Vie En Rose for his expert advice about :

What are the key lingerie staples that every girl should have?

  • Every girl should have a nude multiway bra that can be worn straight, criss-crossed, one shoulder, halter style and strapless - to adapt to many different types of garments.
  • La Vie en Rose multiway bra comes with removable pads so you can either wear it as a push-up or not.
  • A seamless panty is also a lingerie staple.
  • A satin or silk chemise is a luxurious, sexy and classic piece to have in your wardrobe.
  • Otherwise, it’s important that the pieces worn compliment your body type and fit you properly.

What are the signs of well fitting bra?

It shouldn’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all! You should feel supported, you shouldn’t feel the underwire and there shouldn’t be any spillage from the cups or from the sides.

The “Push Up” bra was named one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, when is it appropriate to wear?

Push-up bras have become quite common with some women wearing them every day. Generally it’s meant to create cleavage and therefore should be worn in a setting that is appropriate to show a little skin.

What are some major lingerie faux - pas?

An ill fitting bra is a major faux-pas! 8 out of 10 women wear the wrong bra size and we are trying to change that statistic at La Vie en Rose by offering our clients complimentary bra fittings in all our stores, no appointment necessary.

Also, no visible panty lines please!

How does one properly care for her delicates?

Hand washing is always preferable and we sell a mild detergent in-store that is non-abrasive. We also sell lingerie bags to use in the washing machine to avoid snagging.

To extend the life of your bra, it is recommended to give it a break and not wear it 2 days in a row. We recommend having 2-3 bras to alternate throughout the week.

I totally agree that every girl or woman should have a pair of nude multiway bra…it is a must and it solves so many problems when it comes to wearing different styles.

    • Thanks Dorisi for commenting!

If you haven’t seen it yet, there are a couple of contests on my site now for a $100 gift card from Cadillac Fairview shopping centres, and also a $50 gift certificate from my favorite brunch restaurant Mildred’s Temple Kitchen (in the CASUAL DATE IDEAS story)

Hope you are having a fun weekend

I never knew the tip about not wearing a bra 2 days in a row. Neat. Thanks.

    • Hi Sarah,

It was pretty cool for me too to be able to ask him those questions… It’s been fun lately getting to speak with experts in a wide variety of things that are of personal interest.

      Best wishes,

Those are some fantastic tips -I am adamant about wearing the right bra size -otherwise, it’s just a pain.

I’m curious to know if you found anything of quality at LVeR. As a former customer, I have to be honest and say that their quality is not the best. Loose threads, poor polyester/nylon material, etc. The only thing that has still survived is a swimsuit I bought in 2008! I haven’t shopped there since as it was such a waste of money. Popped in two weeks ago to see if it had improved, and in my opinion, it hasn’t.

    • Hi Cathie,

I picked up a new bikini from La Vie en Rose when doing the photo shoot for the Sherway Gardens giveaway and also a terry cotton pink robe.

I wore the bikini on Thursday at the Scandinave Blue spa at Blue Mountain (and have a post coming up about that), and have also worn my terry robe quite a bit. The LVeR biking isn’t as good of quality as the Marc by Marc Jacobs bikini, but it’s still nice and I think looks good. So really as the adage goes you get what you pay for… But I’ve had a positive experience with what I picked up (the terry robe is excellent)

      Best wishes,
      Marta

Great tips! Although a little odd that they’re coming from a man! Lol 🙂
